About Tony Vanderwarker

I'm a recovering ad man who deserted big city life for the serenity and inspiration of living on a farm. With seven unpublished novels languishing away on my hard drive, my buddy John Grisham offered to mentor me in writing a novel. The result was not what I expected, but I'll take it anyway! The story of writing with Grisham, "Writing With The Master" was published in February 2014 along with the novel I wrote with him "Sleeping Dogs".

It has long been suspected that nuclear weapons flown on B-52s and B-47s during the Cold War were involved in mid-air mishaps and accidents that resulted in bombs being dropped over the United States. Writing Prompt – don’t figure it out

Don't Figure It Out

The prompt to end all prompts. Don’t bother trying to figure it out. Where you’re going or what your pay dirt will turn out to be. Too much depends on stuff that’s way over the horizon, beyond your line of sight and your understanding. In a million years I couldn’t have imagined ending up where […]

Writing Prompt – tenacity

High pile of hardcover books

So here’s a prompt on how to write. Here’s the thing. Barbara O’Neal wrote it. “Writers write. That voice is what makes every one of us special with a unique view of the world. My voice is definitely […]

Best Writing Prompt – ass in the chair!

ass-in-the-chair

The best one is simple, get out of your damn bed, put your ass in the chair, turn on your machine and start to type. No going on Facebook, checking your email, Twittering pals or watching the Today show. Can’t take a quick run, make another pot of coffee, call a buddy or cut your […]

How an unpublished author went from dead in the water to a two-book deal

How Tony Vanderwarker pulled it off is an amazing story. First he wrote a book about the experience of writing a thriller under the guidance of master storyteller John Grisham. With passages from his novel alternating with Grisham’s comments and critiques, Writing With The Master is a master class in thriller writing as well a glimpse into […]

Grub Street Daily – Five Writing Traps John Grisham Helped Me See

writing traps to avoid

Tony Vanderwarker releases his famous 5 writing traps to avoid to the world at The Grub Daily – online publication. First thing he told me:  “The best advice is based on brutal honesty.”  And brutal he was. Get these traps out of the woods you write in sooner rather than later and your story — […]

John Grisham, My Neighbor My Muse

neighbors

Tony Vanderwarker “sounds off” in a published article at Beyond The Margins, an online sounding board for published works. He savaged my first draft.  Tore it to pieces, didn’t even read the whole thing.  The manuscript he returned to me looked like a flock of chickens with inked feet had tromped over it, whole sections […]
